$1350 Item #qb0716-1 Headboard only

Height of Headboard 47"

Width of body 74" plus an additional board to give about 82"

These are a pair of Danish youth beds which we will convert to a king size headboard by permanently attaching them together and adding a board in the center. You can see from the one photo that these headboards were originally intended to be used tight up against each other or pulled apart, depending on the current sleeping situation no doubt. Danish c.1880 Solid and sturdy, a handsome set.

Price includes full restoration.

Under conversion, the headboards and footboards are affixed permanently. If you have a narrow stair situation this can be done on site.

The legs are 6 1/2" long and can be shortened if necessary by 4" if you have a low ceiling in your room.

$2550 Item # Bed 0512-3 Carving and quite tall.

Height of Headboard 51 1/4"

Height of Footboard 36 1/2"

Width of each piece 36 " total width 72"

Danish c. 1880. All original and in excellent condition. Someone waxed these beds, but we will rewax them properly while restoring and converting. Can be converted to king by the addition of a center vertical slat.

Price includes conversion, new sturdy yellow pine side rails, full restoration and delivery in our delivery district or a $200 discount to be used towards trucking. Slats are not included. King beds must sit on their own metal frames.

Under conversion, the headboards and footboards are affixed permanently. If you have a narrow stair situation this can be done on site.

We will need to add a board in the middle to make the bed larger. Generally we take the wood from the original side rails since we need to replace the side rails with new longer ones anyhow.

$550 Item # Bed 0520-8 King Headboard

We brought this beautiful door back from Denmark. It is c.1880, subtly raised classic panels with delicate molding trims, perfectly balanced and sized for a king bed. We will remove the hinges and fill in for the keyhole unless you would like it as is because it is quite interesting. Beautiful!

Price includes full restoration.

Here is an example of a door waxed Golden Oak and prepared for a headboard (i.e. lock removed and space filled in, hinges removed and filled in)

closeup view

To the left is a pair of headboards which Borge altered to fit a king size bed. The closeup photo shows a piece of siderail he inserted to make up the width. The bed was attached to the wall so we removed the legs, but otherwise you could keep the legs. It looks quite wonderful and can be a solution to the problem of finding an appropriate headboard for a king bed. This can be done with any of the sets of twin beds which have the same height footboard and headboard.

General Information

Mattress sizes....

We custom resize each bed to standard contemporary sizes, but on our last delivery we measured the brand new twin mattress and instead of 39 x 75 which has been the norm for many years, this mattress was 37 1/4 wide x 74 long. In addition instead of 8 inches of thickness for the mattress, this particular twin mattress was 11 inches thick. The queen mattress on our last delivery was also smaller and fatter than usual. If you order one of these smaller thicker mattresses, please let us know! Otherwise we will size twin to 39 x 75 x 8. Our usual queen measures 60 x 80 x 8.

SLATS...are included for queen and twin beds unless you tell us you do not need them.

Siderails..

We have the originals, but do not trust them any more so we generally replace them with yellow pine rails which we stain to match our beds. If your bed style had a sleigh rail side (to keep children from rolling out we presume), it can be put onto the bed if it has not been resized as yet for an hour's labor charge. If you wish to add these stylish sleigh edges to your bed we can do it for you even if it was not on your original bed for a minimal labor and material charge as long as the bed has not been resized.

This is how the new yellow pine side rails look BEFORE finishing. We will stain and wax to match best possible the original old wood foot and head boards.

Here you can see the little ledge we put inside, then the slats go on and then your mattress.

Here is an example of the new yellow pine straight side rails that we put on many twin beds and on all king and queen size beds.

We added sleigh bed rails and converted this bed to queen size...more info on bed conversions on this page.

A little history...

The earlier beds are always two Scandinavian narrow twin sizes that were cleverly made to be pushed together or separated as required. We resize them to a standard American queen size mattress and affix them permanently together. The styles are a bit more robust, often with carving and heavier ornamentation. This can be a real advantage if you have a narrow stairway. These beds are easily assembled on site.

Delivery...we deliver in a huge area, but if we can't deliver ourselves, we do discount the beds for pick up or for trucking.

Our shop always carries a wonderful selection of bedside stands, dressers and armoires to coordinate with our beds.
