When resized to a standard American Twin the inside of the bed measures approximately 39 1/2 x 75 1/2

The exterior will then measure from 78-82" in length depending on the thickness of the corner posts.

Lovely Danish bed c.1880 with straight side rails. We can convert this to a standard twin. The siderails will have to be of yellow pine which we will stain to match the bed and will be slightly outside the headboard in order to give us 39" on the interior. The original siderails are of course shorter than American standard. If you want the bed in its original sizing, you can use a futon.

The condition of the bed is simply excellent, very tight grained wood, classic construction and design.

Please ignore the discolorations which are water stains. They will entirely disappear during the restoration process.

The feet! The wonderful turnip feet are slightly different from each other. One is mahogany colored, fortunately that one sits in the way back in the center because we can not change the color.

Under conversion, the headboards and footboards are affixed permanently. If you have a narrow stair situation this can be done on site.

Mattress sizes....

We custom resize each bed to standard contemporary sizes, but on our last delivery we measured the brand new twin mattress and instead of 39 x 75 which has been the norm for many years, this mattress was 37 1/4 wide x 74 long. In addition instead of 8 inches of thickness for the mattress, this particular twin mattress was 11 inches thick. The queen mattress on our last delivery was also smaller and fatter than usual. If you order one of these smaller thicker mattresses, please let us know! Otherwise we will size twin to 39 x 75 x 8. Our usual queen measures 60 x 80 x 8.

SLATS...are included for queen and twin beds unless you tell us you do not need them.

Siderails..

We have the originals, but do not trust them any more so we generally replace them with yellow pine rails which we stain to match our beds. If your bed style had a sleigh rail side (to keep children from rolling out we presume), it can be put onto the bed if it has not been resized as yet for an hour's labor charge. If you wish to add these stylish sleigh edges to your bed we can do it for you even if it was not on your original bed for a minimal labor and material charge as long as the bed has not been resized.

This is how the new yellow pine side rails look BEFORE finishing. We will stain and wax to match best possible the original old wood foot and head boards.

Here you can see the little ledge we put inside, then the slats go on and then your mattress.

A little history...

The earlier beds are always two Scandinavian narrow twin sizes that were cleverly made to be pushed together or separated as required. We resize them to a standard American queen size mattress and affix them permanently together. The styles are a bit more robust, often with carving and heavier ornamentation. This can be a real advantage if you have a narrow stairway. These beds are easily assembled on site.

Trundle beds.....

I measured one that we have and figured up the clearances necessary for the typical metal pop up trundle frame available at most mattress stores. We have used one of these for 20 years and it works great.

You will need to buy two normal thickness (8") twin mattresses, no box springs.

Picking a bed...please select one that we have not converted as yet! We will have to have the side rails attached higher than usual and make the side rails not quite as tall. Otherwise No Problem this is an easy conversion!
