Mangle Boards Mangels or manglesboards, also known as smoothing boards were used as courtship or betrothal gifts. Those are the ones shown on these pages, but larger heavier undecorated ones were used to iron linen. They are at least twice as large, undecorated and unpainted and made of oak or beech for increased weight. Each one had its own thick round dowel about 3" thick and perhaps 18-24" long. You would wrap your damp linen around the large diameter dowel then roll the whole assembly with your mangel providing a really good workout. It works very well!

$1100 #Mangle Board 102009-4 Danish dated 1807

This horse is bracing itself against the wind. A lovely green and orange decorated board with fluted edges and with initials END, dated 1807. Horse a very little bit worn around the ears where it was no doubt often petted, shows the remains of black paint and sits very slightly loose in the board. Although shown hanging from a string, we don't recommend this --this is why the horse handles work themselves loose, better to use a screwed on attachment on the board for a secure hanger.

Length 27"

Width 4 3/4"

Height 5 1/2"

$850 #Mangle Board 102009-1

Length 21 1/2"

Width 4 7/8"

Height 6 3/8"

Swedish mangelboard c.1850 in excellent condition with a primitive and at the same time contemporary feel. Chip carved design on the edges. The handsome horse has an arched neck and a set of reins.

Although the rest of the mangel board is stained, the horse itself has a neat painted blaze.

A hook was attached at some point so this mangel will be easy to hang for display.

$950 #Mangle Board 102009-2

Strongly handsome Swedish mangelboard perhaps the groom was also? I hope so!

A bit of chip carving on the end in a graceful fan design. The horse handle itself has a nearly contemporary feel in its strong clean lines. Excellent condition. c.1850. Someone used a handy cup hook as a sturdy wall hanger.

Length 24"

Width 4 1/2"

Height 6 1/4"

$ 1100 #Mangel 1014-22

Length 24 1/2"

Width 5 1/2"

Height 5 1/2"

Faintly painted on this very early charming Swedish mangel....initials A N then I am not sure of the last one. The horse is somewhat loose but still secure. The paint is fabulous powdery green and orange. Very early 1800's. The horse is wearing a bridle and reins and is spotted! I will have to admit that this is my favorite kind of mangel. It just feels like love and the wear on the handle paint shows that it was much handled and adored through time.

$ 850 #Mangel 1015-1

Length 25 1/4"

Width 5"

Height 4"

Swedish mangel dated 1883 with initials HL

A delicate horse and a lovely scalloped end. Green paint which shows that nice powder from age.

$ 1150 #Mangel 1015-2 Flowers

Length 25 1/4"

Width 7"

Height 5 3/4"

Swedish mangel dated 1832 with initials DMD. The last D would stand for datter or daughter. Rarely seen cheerful orange and cream flowers on a soft green background. The handle is loose but secure.

The tail is very nice and soft. I think it might be human hair --- perhaps from the gentleman?

$ 750 #Mangel 1015-3

Length 23 3/8"

Width 5 3/4"

Height 5 3/4"

Swedish mangel dated 1843 with the intials JH and inscribed raised hearts. Red and green paint.

$ 750 #Mangel 1015-4

Length 18 3/4"

Width 4 3/4"

Height 5 1/2"

Inscribed on this Swedish mangel....initials A P & K H --- how romantic to have both initials and very unusual.

Dated on the opposite side of the handle 1811 with little teeny triangular dots above the ones that I believe represent hearts. The horse is a bit loose but secure. Another unusual feature are the small trees -- trees of life?

$ 950 #Mangel 1015-10

Length 25 1/4"

Width 5"

Height 6 3/4"

Swedish mangel dated 1868 with initials H or K then A D. Finely carved black horse with great expression and a blaze. Lettering in red and yellow on a grass green background with white liner work.

$1250 #Mangel 100609-1 Bottle brush mane

Length 24 1/2"

Width 7"

Height 8" to top of brushy mane

Swedish c.1850 in original garnet paint with white outlining and blaze on horse. If you look closely at this photo...

you can see that a brush which was used to clean glass lamp chimneys was inserted to serve as a nice bushy mane.

This horse originally had leather ears and no doubt a brushy tail as well.

The head is exquisitely carved and very noble.

Excellent condition.

$1250 #Mangel 100609-2

Length 25"

Width 5 1/2"

Height 6 1/2"

A dramatically arched neck on this handsome mangelboard. Swedish mid 1800's in its original green paint. Someone has put a little metal hanging hook on to one end which is taped over to keep it from scratching your wall aper. The ears and legs are beautifully carved and the horse has a very full tail.

Excellent condition.

$750 #Mangel 100609-3 Dated 1845

Length 23 1/2"

Width 5 "

Height 5"

Swedish mangelboard dated 1845 in its original green and orange paint. The handle pegs are visible. I do not know what the apostrophe is over the middle initial, have never seen this before, if anyone knows please let me know.

Excellent condition.

$ 275 Item # Swedish Mangel 1201-6

Length 31"

Width 4 1/2"

Original paint in rare blue, excellent condition, simple character.

$750 Mangleboard #09019-1 Norwegian dated 1855

Red roses, grain paint and black handle, substantial weight. This smoothing board, although I am sure it was a gift, was used and there is wear on the corners and sides. It is much heavier than other boards of its size. Charming grain paint over an orange undercoat, romantic spray of roses with green leaves, intials JM, dated 1855, beautiful yellow script.

I took a lot of photos...sometimes old things do not seem to want their picture taken. I had a hard time capturing the solid character and beautiful hand feel of this board.

Height 4 1/2"

Length 27 1/2"

Width 5 3/4"
